Lichfield City won their final home game of the season 3-0 thanks to a header from Luke Childs, a tap in at the far post from Lichfield’s top goalscorer Jack Edwards and a brilliant free-kick from Sam Fitzgerald. The win for Ivor Green’s men means that a third-place finish is guaranteed, in what has been a fantastic season for the club.

Lichfield took the lead just after 8 minutes when influential midfielder Fitzgerald fired a brilliant cross-field ball to Luke Keen on the left. The striker whipped in a delicious cross and Childs was there at the back post to head in past the outstretched grasp of goalkeeper Connor Hill, in what was a fantastically well-worked opener.

The hosts looked comfortable until 20 minutes in when defender Leighton McMenemy was sent off. Khail Harrison was in on goal and McMenemy couldn’t catch him and caught the striker, but with Jamie Elkes seemingly on the cover, the decision to send off the defender was a controversial one.

Despite the man disadvantage, Lichfield nearly doubled their lead on the stroke of half-time, when a Fitzgerald won free-kick, was cannoned off the post by Jack Edwards. The wall split at the last second and Edwards’ effort hit the post.

It eventually was 2-0 20 minutes into a quiet second half. Lewi Burnside played a fantastic ball in behind Romulus’ defence to Fitzgerald, he tried to cut it back to Keen, but defender Rylan John tried to clear and in doing so allowed Edwards with all the time in the world to tap in past Hill, to double the host’s advantage.

Romulus had a few half-chances in the second half, Amechi Kinglsey Eze-Sunday went close with a header, but his effort went wide of Beeson’s near post.

Romulus had a sending off of their own, when Kyle Burke, who had a torrid afternoon was dismissed for a second bookable offence on Fitzgerald, the midfielder glided past him and was taken down 20 yards from goal.

Fitzgerald struck the free-kick superbly and it beat Hill, who didn’t have a chance with the powerful effort and in doing so sealed an emphatic win.

As the league season draws to a close, attentions now turn to the JW Hunt cup semi-final against Lye Town on Thursday night, a game you won’t want to miss.
